Though the festival lasts until May 7, the winners of Hot Docs were announced on May 5. During the ceremony, which was organised in Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto, the festival jury gave twelve awards with a total value of 67 000 dollars. One of the awards went to the film "Volte" by Karolina Poryzała and Monika Kotecka.
"Volte" won the Honourable Mention in the short documentary film competition. The jury was delighted with the way how the moment of transformation of a young track and field athlete from a girl into a woman was captured, both in the terms of the plot and in the visual sense.
Zuzia, the protagonist of the film „"Volte," is one of the best athletes in the team. Because of her youth and physique, she is lifted by the older, stronger team-mates – "the lower ones." She is the "upper one" – the crown of the acrobatic pyramid. A new, intensive season begins. During the training sessions, it turns out that Zuzia lost her flexibility. The figures in which she participates lack gracefulness and lightness. She cannot perform in harmony with the rhythm of the vaulting horse. Initially, the sport couch blames the older team members for the failures. It is them who are expected to care about stability and safety. Stress and tension appear in the team.
Canadian festival Hot Docs is one of the most important documentary film festivals in the world and the largest one in North America. The first edition was held in Toronto in 1993 and since then, the festival has been constantly growing.
